I’ve spread the word about this tour. It was really interesting and quite moving to hear the story of how the congregation itself built this gem of a chapel in their freer time after a day in the mills. The role plays were excellent as was the tea and home made cakes. Cheers Tony, another great OITC trip.
Thanks to Tony Openshaw for organizing another great day trip. On this occasion, we visited this fascinating and educational museum in Oldham. I was surprised to learn that the whole ‘Independent Methodist’ movement began at this modest chapel in Oldham, and that the founders would not be told by others how they ought to interpret scripture or how to behave. They did not forbid alcohol, which must have been an advantage to recruitment! It was a practical response to the needs of coal miners and cotton mill workers, who worked in dusty environments and needed a drink! The actors and facilitators were fantastic and made us feel very welcome. The tea and cakes (including gluten-free options) were excellent. Thanks once again for an opportunity to learn and to socialize in great company.
I enjoyed the report back about the Methodist Chapel in Oldham,I must go there myself with my best mate!
